           Thewholehouseholdwereamazedtoseeme,withoutanynotice,atthattimeinthemorning,andsoaccompanied;andtheirsurprisewasnotdiminishedbymyinquiries.Noone,however,hadbeenthere.Itcouldnotbedoubtedthatthiswasthetruth."Then,MissSummerson,"saidmycompanion,"wecan’tbetoosoonatthecottagewherethosebrickmakersaretobefound.MostinquiriesthereIleavetoyou,ifyou’llbesogoodastomake’em.Thenaturalestwayisthebestway,andthenaturalestwayisyourownway."Wesetoffagainimmediately.Onarrivingatthecottage,wefounditshutupandapparentlydeserted,butoneoftheneighbourswhoknewmeandwhocameoutwhenIwastryingtomakesomeonehearinformedmethatthetwowomenandtheirhusbandsnowlivedtogetherinanotherhouse,madeoflooseroughbricks,whichstoodonthemarginofthepieceofgroundwherethekilnswereandwherethelongrowsofbricksweredrying.Welostnotimeinrepairingtothisplace,whichwaswithinafewhundredyards;andasthedoorstoodajar,Ipusheditopen.Therewereonlythreeofthemsittingatbreakfast,thechildlyingasleeponabedinthecorner.ItwasJenny,themotherofthedeadchild,whowasabsent.Theotherwomanroseonseeingme;andthemen,thoughtheywere,asusual,sulkyandsilent,eachgavemeamorosenodofrecognition.AlookpassedbetweenthemwhenMr.Bucketfollowedmein,andIwassurprisedtoseethatthewomanevidentlyknewhim.Ihadaskedleavetoenterofcourse.
