Thesewere,chiefly,whetherIhadhadmuchcommunicationwithmymother(towhomheonlyreferredasLadyDedlock),whenandwhereIhadspokenwithherlast,andhowshehadbecomepossessedofmyhandkerchief.WhenIhadsatisfiedhimonthesepoints,heaskedmeparticularlytoconsider—takingtimetothink—whetherwithinmyknowledgetherewasanyone,nomatterwhere,inwhomshemightbeatalllikelytoconfideundercircumstancesofthelastnecessity.Icouldthinkofnoonebutmyguardian.ButbyandbyImentionedMr.Boythorn.Hecameintomymindasconnectedwithhisoldchivalrousmannerofmentioningmymother’snameandwithwhatmyguardianhadinformedmeofhisengagementtohersisterandhisunconsciousconnexionwithherunhappystory.Mycompanionhadstoppedthedriverwhileweheldthisconversation,thatwemightthebetterheareachother.Henowtoldhimtogoonagainandsaidtome,afterconsideringwithinhimselfforafewmoments,thathehadmadeuphismindhowtoproceed.Hewasquitewillingtotellmewhathisplanwas,butIdidnotfeelclearenoughtounderstandit.Wehadnotdrivenveryfarfromourlodgingswhenwestoppedinaby-streetatapublic-lookingplacelightedupwithgas.Mr.Buckettookmeinandsatmeinanarm-chairbyabrightfire.Itwasnowpastone,asIsawbytheclockagainstthewall.
