FromtheseyoucameonRichard’sroom,whichwaspartlibrary,partsitting-room,partbedroom,andseemedindeedacomfortablecompoundofmanyrooms.Outofthatyouwentstraight,withalittleintervalofpassage,totheplainroomwhereMr.Jarndyceslept,alltheyearround,withhiswindowopen,hisbedsteadwithoutanyfurniturestandinginthemiddleofthefloorformoreair,andhiscoldbathgapingforhiminasmallerroomadjoining.Outofthatyoucameintoanotherpassage,wheretherewereback-stairsandwhereyoucouldhearthehorsesbeingrubbeddownoutsidethestableandbeingtoldto"Holdup"and"Getover,"astheyslippedaboutverymuchontheunevenstones.Oryoumight,ifyoucameoutatanotherdoor(everyroomhadatleasttwodoors),gostraightdowntothehallagainbyhalf-a-dozenstepsandalowarchway,wonderinghowyougotbackthereorhadevergotoutofit.Thefurniture,old-fashionedratherthanold,likethehouse,wasaspleasantlyirregular.Ada’ssleeping-roomwasallflowers—inchintzandpaper,invelvet,inneedlework,inthebrocadeoftwostiffcourtlychairswhichstood,eachattendedbyalittlepageofastoolforgreaterstate,oneithersideofthefire-place.Oursitting-roomwasgreenandhadframedandglazeduponthewallsnumbersofsurprisingandsurprisedbirds,staringoutofpicturesatarealtroutinacase,asbrownandshiningasifithadbeenservedwithgravy;atthedeathofCaptainCook;andatthewholeprocessofpreparingteainChina,asdepictedbyChineseartists.
