A Sudden Descent
ThevalleyoftheColoradowasalreadysunkinshadow,andnightwasfastdrawinghermantleovertheeasternslopesoftheAndes.Thewesternsidewasilluminedbytheraysofthesettingsun,andpeaksandglaciersflashedbackhisgoldenbeamswithdazzlingradiance.Onthesouththeviewwasmagnificent.AcrossthewildvalleyoftheTorbido,abouttwomilesdistant,rosethevolcanoofAntuco.Themountainroaredlikesomeenormousmonster,andvomitedredsmoke,mingledwithtorrentsofsootyflame.Thesurroundingpeaksappearedonfire.Showersofred-hotstones,cloudsofreddishvaporandrocketsoflava,allcombined,presentedtheappearanceofglowingsparklingstreams.Thesplendorofthespectacleincreasedeveryinstantasnightdeepened,andthewholeskybecamelightedupwithadazzlingreflectionoftheblazingcrater,whilethesun,graduallybecomingshornofhissunsetglories,disappearedlikeastarlostinthedistantdarknessofthehorizon.
PaganelandGlenarvanwouldhaveremainedlongenoughgazingatthesublimestrugglebetweenthefiresofearthandheaven,ifthemorepracticalWilsonhadnotremindedthemofthebusinessonhand.Therewasnowoodtobefound,however,butfortunatelytherockswerecoveredwithapoor,dryspeciesoflichen.Ofthistheymadeanampleprovision,aswellasofaplantcalledLLARETTA,therootofwhichburnstolerablywell.ThispreciouscombustiblewascarriedbacktotheCASUCHAandheapeduponthehearth.Itwasadifficultmattertokindleit,though,andstillmoretokeepitalight.
