Onthe25thofSeptember,theyachtarrivedofftheStraitsofMagellan,andenteredthemwithoutdelay.ThisrouteisgenerallypreferredbysteamersontheirwaytothePacificOcean.Theexactlengthofthestraitsis372miles.Shipsofthelargesttonnagefind,throughout,sufficientdepthofwater,evenclosetotheshore,andthereisagoodbottomeverywhere,andabundanceoffreshwater,andriversaboundinginfish,andforestsingame,andplentyofsafeandaccessibleharbors;infactathousandthingswhicharelackinginStraitLemaireandCapeHorn,withitsterriblerocks,incessantlyvisitedbyhurricaneandtempest.
