           Thatevening,March1,Glenarvanandhiscompanions,emergingatlastfromtheimmensekauri-forest,campedatthefootofMountIkirangi,whosesummitrosefivethousandfivehundredfeetintotheair.AtthispointtheyhadtraveledahundredmilesfromMaunganamu,andtheshorewasstillthirtymilesaway.JohnMangleshadcalculatedonaccomplishingthewholejourneyintendays,buthedidnotforeseethephysicaldifficultiesofthecountry.
