Oneverysidejetsofwaterroselikeparkfountains,outofaseaofvapor;someofthemcontinuous,othersintermittent,asifacapriciousPlutocontrolledtheirmovements.Theyroselikeanamphitheateronnaturalterraces;theirwatersgraduallyflowedtogetherunderfoldsofwhitesmoke,andcorrodingtheedgesofthesemi-transparentstepsofthisgiganticstaircase.Theyfedwholelakeswiththeirboilingtorrents.
Fartherstill,beyondthehotspringsandtumultuousgeysers,camethesolfataras.Thegroundlookedasifcoveredwithlargepustules.
