           Forfourorfivemilesthechasewasvigorouslypursued.Thekangaroosshowednosignsofweariness,andthedogs,whohadreasonenoughtofeartheirstrongpawsandsharpnails,didnotcaretoapproachthem.Butatlast,wornoutwiththerace,thetroopstopped,andthe"oldman"leanedagainstthetrunkofatree,readytodefendhimself.Oneofthepointers,carriedawaybyexcitement,wentuptohim.Nextminutetheunfortunatebeastleapedintotheair,andfelldownagaincompletelyrippedup.

           Thewholepack,indeed,wouldhavehadlittlechancewiththesepowerfulmarsupia.Theyhadtodispatchthefellowwithrifles.Nothingbutballscouldbringdownthegiganticanimal.

           Justatthismoment,Robertwaswellnighthevictimofhisownimprudence.
