           ThewholeterritoryofSouthAustraliaisdividedintolots,eachcontainingeightyacres,andthesearegrantedtocolonistsbythegovernment.Anyindustriousman,bypropercultivation,cannotonlygetalivingoutofhislot,butlaybypounds80ayear.

           PaddyO’Mooreknewthis.Heprofitedbyhisownformerexperience,andlaidbyeverypennyhecouldtillhehadsavedenoughtopurchasenewlots.Hisfamilyprospered,andhisfarmalso.TheIrishpeasantbecamealandedproprietor,andthoughhislittleestatehadonlybeenundercultivationfortwoyears,hehadfivehundredacresclearedbyhisownhands,andfivehundredheadofcattle.Hewashisownmaster,afterhavingbeenaserfinEurope,andasindependentasonecanbeinthefreestcountryintheworld.

           Hisguestscongratulatedhimheartilyasheendedhisnarration;andPaddyO’Moorenodoubtexpectedconfidenceforconfidence,buthewaitedinvain.
