           Theywereallsoonassembledontheloftycrags,andfromthiselevationcouldcommandaviewofthewholeplainbelow.Itappearedentirelyuncultivated,andcoveredwithshrubsandbushes.GlenarvanthoughtitresembledsomeglensinthelowlandsofScotland,andPaganelfancieditlikesomebarrenpartsofBritanny.Butalongthecoastthecountryappearedtobeinhabited,andsignificantsignsofindustryrevealedthepresenceofcivilizedmen,notsavages.

           "Amill!"exclaimedRobert.

           And,sureenough,inthedistancethelongsailsofamillappeared,apparentlyaboutthreemilesoff.

           "Itcertainlyisawindmill,"saidPaganel,afterexaminingtheobjectinquestionthroughhistelescope.

           "Letusgotoit,then,"saidGlenarvan.

           Awaytheystarted,and,afterwalkingabouthalfanhour,thecountrybegantoassumeanewaspect,suddenlychangingitssterilityforcultivation.Insteadofbushes,quick-sethedgesmettheeye,inclosingrecentclearings.Severalbullocksandabouthalfadozenhorseswerefeedinginmeadows,surroundedbyacaciassuppliedfromthevastplantationsofKangarooIsland.
