Inthisalarmingsituationandamiddreadfulalternationsofhopeanddespair,the12thofDecemberpassedaway,andtheensuingnight,JohnManglesneverlefthispost,noteventotakefood.Thoughhisimpassivefacebetrayednosymptomsoffear,hewastorturedwithanxiety,andhissteadygazewasfixedonthenorth,asiftryingtopiercethroughthethickmiststhatenshroudedit.
Therewas,indeed,greatcauseforfear.TheDuncanwasoutofhercourse,andrushingtowardtheAustraliancoastwithaspeedwhichnothingcouldlessen.ToJohnManglesitseemedasifathunderboltweredrivingthemalong.Everyinstantheexpectedtheyachtwoulddashagainstsomerock,forhereckonedthecoastcouldnotbemorethantwelvemilesoff,andbetterfarbeinmidoceanexposedtoallitsfurythantoonearland.
