ItsFAUNAandFLORA,however,werepoorintheextreme.Theonlyspecimensofquadrupeds,birds,fishandcetaceawereafewwildboars,stormypetrels,albatrosses,perchandseals.Hereandtherethermalspringsandchalybeatewatersescapedfromtheblacklava,andthindarkvaporsroseabovethevolcanicsoil.Someofthesespringswereveryhot.JohnManglesheldhisthermometerinoneofthem,andfoundthetemperaturewas176degreesFahrenheit.Fishcaughtintheseaafewyardsoff,cookedinfiveminutesintheseallbutboilingwaters,afactwhichmadePaganelresolvenottoattempttobatheinthem.
Towardevening,afteralongpromenade,GlenarvanandhispartybadeadieutothegoodoldM.Viot,andreturnedtotheyacht,wishinghimallthehappinesspossibleonhisdesertisland,andreceivinginreturntheoldman’sblessingontheirexpedition.
