ThislonelygroupintheIndianOceanconsistsoftwodistinctislands,thirty-threemilesapart,andsituatedexactlyonthemeridianoftheIndianpeninsula.TothenorthisAmsterdamIsland,andtothesouthSt.Paul;buttheyhavebeenoftenconfoundedbygeographersandnavigators.
AtthetimeoftheDuncan’Svisittotheisland,thepopulationconsistedofthreepeople,aFrenchmanandtwomulattoes,allthreeemployedbythemerchantproprietor.PaganelwasdelightedtoshakehandswithacountrymaninthepersonofgoodoldMonsieurViot.Hewasfaradvancedinyears,butdidthehonorsoftheplacewithmuchpoliteness.
