           Thelearnedgeographerwassleepingassoundasamole.Astrongarmpulledhimupoutofthesandandmadehimcallout:

           "Whogoesthere?"

           "ItisI,Paganel."

           "Who?"

           "Glenarvan.Come,Ineedyoureyes."

           "Myeyes,"repliedPaganel,rubbingthemvigorously.

           "Yes,IneedyoureyestomakeouttheDuncaninthisdarkness,socome."

           "Confoundthenyctalopia!"saidPaganel,inwardly,thoughdelightedtobeofanyservicetohisfriend.

           Hegotupandshookhisstiffenedlimbs,andstretchingandyawningasmostpeopledowhenrousedfromsleep,followedGlenarvantothebeach.

           Glenarvanbeggedhimtoexaminethedistanthorizonacrossthesea,whichhedidmostconscientiouslyforsomeminutes.

           "Well,doyouseenothing?"askedGlenarvan.

           "Notathing.Evenacatcouldn’tseetwostepsbeforeher."
