Theywereallsilent,troubled,andterrified,astheywatchedbranchafterbranchshrivel,andcrack,andwritheintheflamelikelivingserpents,andthendropintotheswollentorrent,stillredandgleaming,asitwasborneswiftlyalongontherapidcurrent.Theflamessometimesrosetoaprodigiousheight,andseemedalmostlostintheatmosphere,andsometimes,beatendownbythehurricane,closelyenvelopedtheOMBUlikearobeofNessus.Terrorseizedtheentiregroup.Theywerealmostsuffocatedwithsmoke,andscorchedwiththeunbearableheat,fortheconflagrationhadalreadyreachedthelowerbranchesontheirsideoftheOMBU.Toextinguishitorcheckitsprogresswasimpossible;andtheysawthemselvesirrevocablycondemnedtoatorturingdeath,likethevictimsofHindoodivinities.
Atlast,theirsituationwasabsolutelyintolerable.Ofthetwodeathsstaringthemintheface,theyhadbetterchoosethelesscruel.
