           Itisastrong,nimbleanimal,generallyinhabitingmarshyplaces,andpursuingaquaticanimalsbyswimming,prowlingaboutbynightandsleepingduringtheday.ItsattacksareparticularlydreadedattheESTANCIAS,orsheepstations,asitoftencommitsconsiderableravages,carryingoffthefinestoftheflock.Singly,theAGUARAisnotmuchtobefeared;buttheygenerallygoinimmensepacks,andonehadbetterhavetodealwithajaguarorcougarthanwiththem.

           Bothfromthenoiseofthehowlingandthemultitudeofshadowsleapingabout,Glenarvanhadaprettygoodideaofthenumberofthewolves,andheknewtheyhadscentedagoodmealofhumanfleshorhorseflesh,andnoneofthemwouldgobacktotheirdenswithoutashare.Itwascertainlyaveryalarmingsituationtobein.

           Theassailantsweregraduallydrawingcloser.Thehorsesdisplayedsignsoftheliveliestterror,withtheexceptionofThaouka,whostampedhisfoot,andtriedtobreaklooseandgetout.Hismastercouldonlycalmhimbykeepingupalow,continuouswhistle.

           GlenarvanandRoberthadpostedthemselvessoastodefendtheopeningoftheRAMADA.TheywerejustgoingtofireintothenearestranksofthewolveswhenThalcaveloweredtheirweapons.

           "WhatdoesThalcavemean?"askedRobert.

           ButthiswasnottheIndian’sreason,andsoGlenarvansawwhenheliftedthepowder-flask,showedhimitwasnearlyempty.
