Heywardrashlyimitatedhisexample,thoughbothwere,amomentafterwards,admonishedofitsmadness,byhearingthebellowingofapiece,thattheHuronsfoundtimetodischargedownthepassageintherocks,thebulletfromwhichevengavetheyoungMohicanaslightwound.

Encumberedbyhisrifle,and,perhaps,notsustainedbysodeepaninterestinthecaptiveashiscompanions,thescoutsufferedthelattertoprecedehimalittle,Uncas,inhisturn,takingtheleadofHeyward.Inthismanner,rocks,precipices,anddifficultiesweresurmountedinanincrediblyshortspace,thatatanothertime,andunderothercircumstances,wouldhavebeendeemedalmostinsuperable.
