Thebloodyandinhumansceneratherincidentallymentionedthandescribedintheprecedingchapter,isconspicuousinthepagesofcolonialhistory,bythemeritedtitleof"TheMassacreofWilliamHenry."ItsofardeepenedthestainwhichapreviousandverysimilareventhadleftuponthereputationoftheFrenchcommander,thatitwasnotentirelyerasedbyhisearlyandgloriousdeath.Itisnowbecomingobscuredbytime;andthousands,whoknowthatMontcalmdiedlikeaheroontheplainsofAbraham,haveyettolearnhowmuchhewasdeficientinthatmoralcouragewithoutwhichnomancanbetrulygreat.Pagesmightbewrittentoprove,fromthisillustriousexample,thedefectsofhumanexcellence;toshowhoweasyitisforgeneroussentiments,highcourtesy,andchivalrouscourage,tolosetheirinfluencebeneaththechillingblightofselfishness,andtoexhibittotheworldamanwhowasgreatinalltheminorattributesofcharacter,butwhowasfoundwantingwhenitbecamenecessarytoprovehowmuchprincipleissuperiortopolicy.Butthetaskwouldexceedourprerogatives;and,ashistory,likelove,issoapttosurroundherheroeswithanatmosphereofimaginarybrightness,itisprobablethatLouisdeSaintVéranwillbeviewedbyposterityonlyasthegallantdefenderofhiscountry,whilehiscruelapathyontheshoresoftheOswegoandoftheHoricanwillbeforgotten.
