Inselectinganothertoperformtheofficeofreclaiminghishighlyprizedrifle,thescouthadlostsightofnoneofhishabitualcaution.HeknewthatMaguahadnotcomeunattended,andhealsoknewthatHuronspieswatchedthemovementsoftheirnewenemies,alongthewholeboundaryofthewoods.Itwould,therefore,havebeenfataltohimselftohaveattemptedtheexperiment;awarriorwouldhavefarednobetter;butthedangerofaboywouldnotbelikelytocommenceuntilafterhisobjectwasdiscovered.WhenHeywardjoinedhim,thescoutwascoollyawaitingtheresultofthisexperiment.
Theboy,whohadbeenwellinstructed,andwassufficientlycrafty,proceeded,withabosomthatwasswellingwiththeprideofsuchaconfidence,andallthehopesofyoungambition,carelesslyacrosstheclearingtothewood,whichheenteredatapointatsomelittledistancefromtheplacewherethegunsweresecreted.Theinstant,however,hewasconcealedbythefoliageofthebushes,hisduskyformwastobeseengliding,likethatofaserpent,towardsthedesiredtreasure.Hewassuccessful;andinanothermomentheappearedflyingacrossthenarrowopeningthatskirtedthebaseoftheterraceonwhichthevillagestood,withthevelocityofanarrow,andbearingaprizeineachhand.Hehadactuallygainedthecrags,andwasleapinguptheirsideswithincredibleactivity,whenashotfromthewoodsshowedhowaccuratehadbeenthejudgmentofthescout.
