OnthatmorningwhenMagualedhissilentpartyfromthesettlementofthebeaversintotheforest,inthemannerdescribed,thesunroseupontheDelawareencampmentasifithadsuddenlyburstuponabusypeople,activelyemployedinallthecustomaryavocationsofhighnoon.Thewomenranfromlodgetolodge,someengagedinpreparingtheirmorning’smeal,afewearnestlybentonseekingthecomfortsnecessarytotheirhabits,butmorepausingtoexchangehastyandwhisperedsentenceswiththeirfriends.Thewarriorswereloungingingroups,musingmorethantheyconversed;andwhenafewwordswereuttered,speakinglikemenwhodeeplyweighedtheiropinions.Theinstrumentsofthechaseweretobeseeninabundanceamongthelodges;butnonedeparted.Hereandthereawarriorwasexamininghisarms,withanattentionthatisrarelybestowedontheimplements,whennootherenemythanthebeastsoftheforestisexpectedtobeencountered.And,occasionally,theeyesofawholegroupwereturnedsimultaneouslytowardsalargeandsilentlodgeinthecentreofthevillage,asifitcontainedthesubjectoftheircommonthoughts.
Duringtheexistenceofthisscene,amansuddenlyappearedatthefarthestextremityofaplatformofrockwhichformedthelevelofthevillage.Hewaswithoutarms,andhispainttendedrathertosoftenthanincreasethenaturalsternnessofhisausterecountenance.WheninfullviewoftheDelawareshestopped,andmadeagestureofamity,bythrowinghisarmupwardtowardsheaven,andthenlettingitfallimpressivelyonhisbreast.
