TheHuronarose,andshookhimselflikealionquittinghislair.Notawordescapedhim,thoughhishandplayedconvulsivelywiththehandleofhisknife,whilehisloweringeyesscannedthewholeparty,asiftheysoughtanobjectsuitedtothefirstburstofhisvengeance.
ItwashappyforUncasandthescout,andevenDavid,thattheywereallbeyondthereachofhisarmatsuchamoment;for,assuredly,norefinementincrueltywouldthenhavedeferredtheirdeaths,inoppositiontothepromptingsofthefiercetemperthatnearlychokedhim.Meetingeverywherefacesthatheknewasfriends,thesavagegratedhisteethtogetherlikeraspsofiron,andswallowedhispassionforwantofavictimonwhomtoventit.Thisexhibitionofangerwasnotedbyallpresent;and,fromanapprehensionofexasperatingatemperthatwasalreadychafednearlytomadness,severalminutesweresufferedtopassbeforeanotherwordwasuttered.When,however,suitabletimehadelapsed,theoldestofthepartyspoke.
"Myfriendhasfoundanenemy,"hesaid."Ishenigh,thattheHuronsmaytakerevenge?"
"LettheDelawaredie!"exclaimedMagua,inavoiceofthunder.
Anotherlongandexpressivesilencewasobserved,andwasbroken,asbefore,withdueprecaution,bythesameindividual.
