Herbreathwas,however,expendedinvain;for,althoughdistinguishedinherownnationasaproficientintheartofabuse,shewaspermittedtoworkherselfintosuchafuryasactuallytofoamatthemouth,withoutcausingamuscletovibrateinthemotionlessfigureofthestranger.Theeffectofhisindifferencebegantoextenditselftotheotherspectators;andayoungster,whowasjustquittingtheconditionofaboy,toenterthestateofmanhood,attemptedtoassistthetermagant,byflourishinghistomahawkbeforetheirvictim,andaddinghisemptyboaststothetauntsofthewoman.Then,indeed,thecaptiveturnedhisfacetowardsthelight,andlookeddownonthestriplingwithanexpressionthatwassuperiortocontempt.Atthenextmomentheresumedhisquietandrecliningattitudeagainstthepost.ButthechangeofposturehadpermittedDuncantoexchangeglanceswiththefirmandpiercingeyesofUncas.
Breathlesswithamazement,andheavilyoppressedwiththecriticalsituationofhisfriend,Heywardrecoiledbeforethelook,tremblinglestitsmeaningmight,insomeunknownmanner,hastentheprisoner’sfate.Therewasnot,however,anyinstantcauseforsuchanapprehension.Justthenawarriorforcedhiswayintotheexasperatedcrowd.Motioningthewomenandchildrenasidewithasterngesture,hetookUncasbythearm,andledhimtowardsthedoorofthecouncillodge.Thitherallthechiefs,andmostofthedistinguishedwarriors,followed;amongwhomtheanxiousHeywardfoundmeanstoenterwithoutattractinganydangerousattentiontohimself.
