Theroutewasnowpainful;lyingovergroundraggedwithrocks,andintersectedwithravines,andtheirprogressproportionatelyslow.Bleakandblackhillslayoneverysideofthem,compensatinginsomedegreefortheadditionaltoilofthemarch,bythesenseofsecuritytheyimparted.Atlengththepartybeganslowlytoclimbasteepandruggedascentbyapaththatcuriouslywoundamongrocksandtrees,avoidingtheone,andsupportedbytheother,inamannerthatshowedithadbeendevisedbymenlongpractisedintheartsofthewilderness.Astheygraduallyrosefromthelevelofthevalleys,thethickdarknesswhichusuallyprecedestheapproachofdaybegantodisperse,andobjectswereseenintheplainandpalpablecolorswithwhichtheyhadbeengiftedbynature.Whentheyissuedfromthestuntedwoodswhichclungtothebarrensidesofthemountain,uponaflatandmossyrockthatformeditssummit,theymetthemorning,asitcameblushingabovethegreenpinesofahillthatlayontheoppositesideofthevalleyoftheHorican.
Thescoutnowtoldthesisterstodismount;andtakingthebridlesfromthemouths,andthesaddlesoffthebacksofthejadedbeasts,heturnedthemloose,togleanascantysubsistenceamongtheshrubsandmeagreherbageofthatelevatedregion.
