Hethenenteredthewater,andfornearanhourtheytravelledinthebedofthebrook,leavingnotrail.Themoonhadalreadysunkintoanimmensepileofblackclouds,whichlayimpendingabovethewesternhorizon,whentheyissuedfromthelowanddeviouswater-coursetoriseagaintothelightandlevelofthesandybutwoodedplain.Herethescoutseemedtobeoncemoreathome,forheheldonhiswaywiththecertaintyanddiligenceofamanwhomovedinthesecurityofhisownknowledge.Thepathsoonbecamemoreuneven,andthetravellerscouldplainlyperceivethatthemountainsdrewnighertothemoneachhand,andthattheywere,intruth,aboutenteringoneoftheirgorges.Suddenly,Hawkeyemadeapause,andwaitinguntilhewasjoinedbythewholeparty,hespoke,thoughintonessolowandcautious,thattheyaddedtothesolemnityofhiswords,inthequietanddarknessoftheplace.
