TheIndianssilentlyrepairedtotheirappointedstations,whichwerefissuresintherocks,whencetheycouldcommandtheapproachestothefootofthefalls.Inthecentreofthelittleisland,afewshortandstuntedpineshadfoundroot,formingathicket,intowhichHawkeyedartedwiththeswiftnessofadeer,followedbytheactiveDuncan.Heretheysecuredthemselves,aswellascircumstanceswouldpermit,amongtheshrubsandfragmentsofstonethatwerescatteredabouttheplace.Abovethemwasabare,roundedrock,oneachsideofwhichthewaterplayeditsgambols,andplungedintotheabyssesbeneath,inthemanneralreadydescribed.Asthedayhadnowdawned,theoppositeshoresnolongerpresentedaconfusedoutline,buttheywereabletolookintothewoods,anddistinguishobjectsbeneaththecanopyofgloomypines.
