           Albert,besidesbeinganelegant,well-lookingyoungman,wasalsopossessedofconsiderabletalentandability;moreover,hewasaviscountarecentlycreatedone,certainly,butinthepresentdayitisnotnecessarytogoasfarbackasNoahintracingadescent,andagenealogicaltreeisequallyestimated,whetherdatedfrom1399ormerely1815;buttocrownalltheseadvantages,AlbertdeMorcerfcommandedanincomeof50,000livres,amorethansufficientsumtorenderhimapersonageofconsiderableimportanceinParis.ItwasthereforenosmallmortificationtohimtohavevisitedmostoftheprincipalcitiesinItalywithouthavingexcitedthemosttriflingobservation.Albert,however,hopedtoindemnifyhimselfforalltheseslightsandindifferencesduringtheCarnival,knowingfullwellthatamongthedifferentstatesandkingdomsinwhichthisfestivityiscelebrated,Romeisthespotwhereeventhewisestandgravestthrowofftheusualrigidityoftheirlives,anddeigntomingleinthefolliesofthistimeoflibertyandrelaxation.

           TheCarnivalwastocommenceonthemorrow;thereforeAlberthadnotaninstanttoloseinsettingforththeprogrammeofhishopes,expectations,andclaimstonotice.Withthisdesignhehadengagedaboxinthemostconspicuouspartofthetheatre,andexertedhimselftosetoffhispersonalattractionsbytheaidofthemostrichandelaboratetoilet.
