           Franzhadsomanagedhisroute,thatduringtheridetotheColosseumtheypassednotasingleancientruin,sothatnopreliminaryimpressioninterferedtomitigatethecolossalproportionsofthegiganticbuildingtheycametoadmire.TheroadselectedwasacontinuationoftheViaSistina;thenbycuttingofftherightangleofthestreetinwhichstandsSantaMariaMaggioreandproceedingbytheViaUrbanaandSanPietroinVincoli,thetravellerswouldfindthemselvesdirectlyoppositetheColosseum.ThisitinerarypossessedanothergreatadvantagethatofleavingFranzatfulllibertytoindulgehisdeepreverieuponthesubjectofSignorPastrini’sstory,inwhichhismysterioushostofMonteCristowassostrangelymixedup.Seatedwithfoldedarmsinacornerofthecarriage,hecontinuedtoponderoverthesingularhistoryhehadsolatelylistenedto,andtoaskhimselfaninterminablenumberofquestionstouchingitsvariouscircumstanceswithout,however,arrivingatasatisfactoryreplytoanyofthem.Onefactmorethantherestbroughthisfriend"SinbadtheSailor"backtohisrecollection,andthatwasthemysterioussortofintimacythatseemedtoexistbetweenthebrigandsandthesailors;andPastrini’saccountofVampa’shavingfoundrefugeonboardthevesselsofsmugglersandfishermen,remindedFranzofthetwoCorsicanbanditshehadfoundsuppingsoamicablywiththecrewofthelittleyacht,whichhadevendeviatedfromitscourseandtouchedatPorto–Vecchioforthesolepurposeoflandingthem.
