SometimesAlbertwouldaffecttomakeajokeofhiswantofsuccess;butinternallyhewasdeeplywounded,andhisself-loveimmenselypiqued,tothinkthatAlbertdeMorcerf,themostadmiredandmostsoughtafterofanyyoungpersonofhisday,shouldthusbepassedover,andmerelyhavehislaborforhispains.Andthethingwassomuchthemoreannoying,as,accordingtothecharacteristicmodestyofaFrenchman,AlberthadquittedPariswiththefullconvictionthathehadonlytoshowhimselfinItalytocarryallbeforehim,andthatuponhisreturnheshouldastonishtheParisianworldwiththerecitalofhisnumerouslove-affairs.Alas,poorAlbert!noneofthoseinterestingadventuresfellinhisway;thelovelyGenoese,Florentines,andNeapolitanswereallfaithful,ifnottotheirhusbands,atleasttotheirlovers,andthoughtnotofchangingevenforthesplendidappearanceofAlbertdeMorcerf;andallhegainedwasthepainfulconvictionthattheladiesofItalyhavethisadvantageoverthoseofFrance,thattheyarefaithfulevenintheirinfidelity.YethecouldnotrestrainahopethatinItaly,aselsewhere,theremightbeanexceptiontothegeneralrule.
