           Aweekpassedby.Dantesemployeditinmanoeuvringhisyachtroundtheisland,studyingitasaskilfulhorsemanwouldtheanimalhedestinedforsomeimportantservice,tillattheendofthattimehewasperfectlyconversantwithitsgoodandbadqualities.TheformerDantesproposedtoaugment,thelattertoremedy.

           UpontheeighthdayhediscernedasmallvesselunderfullsailapproachingMonteCristo.Asitdrewnear,herecognizeditastheboathehadgiventoJacopo.Heimmediatelysignalledit.Hissignalwasreturned,andintwohoursafterwardsthenew-comerlayatanchorbesidetheyacht.
