           Thedelightedbuilderthenofferedhisservicesinprovidingasuitablecrewforthelittlevessel,butthisDantesdeclinedwithmanythanks,sayinghewasaccustomedtocruiseaboutquitealone,andhisprincipalpleasureconsistedinmanaginghisyachthimself;theonlythingthebuildercouldobligehiminwouldbetocontriveasortofsecretclosetinthecabinathisbed’shead,theclosettocontainthreedivisions,soconstructedastobeconcealedfromallbuthimself.Thebuildercheerfullyundertookthecommission,andpromisedtohavethesesecretplacescompletedbythenextday,Dantesfurnishingthedimensionsandplaninaccordancewithwhichtheyweretobeconstructed.

           ThefollowingdayDantessailedwithhisyachtfromGenoa,undertheinspectionofanimmensecrowddrawntogetherbycuriositytoseetherichSpanishnoblemanwhopreferredmanaginghisownyacht.ButtheirwonderwassoonchangedtoadmirationatseeingtheperfectskillwithwhichDanteshandledthehelm.Theboat,indeed,seemedtobeanimatedwithalmosthumanintelligence,sopromptlydiditobeytheslightesttouch;andDantesrequiredbutashorttrialofhisbeautifulcrafttoacknowledgethattheGenoesehadnotwithoutreasonattainedtheirhighreputationintheartofshipbuilding.Thespectatorsfollowedthelittlevesselwiththeireyesaslongasitremainedvisible;theythenturnedtheirconjecturesuponherprobabledestination.
