           Theyallrushedtowardshim,foralllovedEdmondinspiteofhissuperiority;yetJacoporeachedhimfirst.

           HefoundEdmondlyingprone,bleeding,andalmostsenseless.Hehadrolleddownadeclivityoftwelveorfifteenfeet.Theypouredalittlerumdownhisthroat,andthisremedywhichhadbeforebeensobeneficialtohim,producedthesameeffectasformerly.Edmondopenedhiseyes,complainedofgreatpaininhisknee,afeelingofheavinessinhishead,andseverepainsinhisloins.Theywishedtocarryhimtotheshore;butwhentheytouchedhim,althoughunderJacopo’sdirections,hedeclared,withheavygroans,thathecouldnotbeartobemoved.

           ItmaybesupposedthatDantesdidnotnowthinkofhisdinner,butheinsistedthathiscomrades,whohadnothisreasonsforfasting,shouldhavetheirmeal.Asforhimself,hedeclaredthathehadonlyneedofalittlerest,andthatwhentheyreturnedheshouldbeeasier.Thesailorsdidnotrequiremuchurging.Theywerehungry,andthesmelloftheroastedkidwasverysavory,andyourtarsarenotveryceremonious.Anhourafterwardstheyreturned.AllthatEdmondhadbeenabletodowastodraghimselfaboutadozenpacesforwardtoleanagainstamoss-grownrock.

           But,insteadofgrowingeasier,Dantes’painsappearedtoincreaseinviolence.Theoldpatron,whowasobligedtosailinthemorninginordertolandhiscargoonthefrontiersofPiedmontandFrance,betweenNiceandFrejus,urgedDantestotryandrise.
