           Mightitnothavebeenthecardinalhimselfwhohadfirsttracedthem,inorderthattheymightserveasaguideforhisnephewintheeventofacatastrophe,whichhecouldnotforeseewouldhavebeensocomplete.Thissolitaryplacewaspreciselysuitedtotherequirementsofamandesirousofburyingtreasure.Only,mightnotthesebetrayingmarkshaveattractedothereyesthanthoseforwhomtheyweremade?andhadthedarkandwondrousislandindeedfaithfullyguardeditsprecioussecret?

           Itseemed,however,toEdmond,whowashiddenfromhiscomradesbytheinequalitiesoftheground,thatatsixtypacesfromtheharborthemarksceased;nordidtheyterminateatanygrotto.Alargeroundrock,placedsolidlyonitsbase,wastheonlyspottowhichtheyseemedtolead.Edmondconcludedthatperhapsinsteadofhavingreachedtheendoftheroutehehadonlyexploreditsbeginning,andhethereforeturnedroundandretracedhissteps.

           Meanwhilehiscomradeshadpreparedtherepast,hadgotsomewaterfromaspring,spreadoutthefruitandbread,andcookedthekid.Justatthemomentwhentheyweretakingthedaintyanimalfromthespit,theysawEdmondspringingwiththeboldnessofachamoisfromrocktorock,andtheyfiredthesignalagreedupon.Thesportsmaninstantlychangedhisdirection,andranquicklytowardsthem.Butevenwhiletheywatchedhisdaringprogress,Edmond’sfootslipped,andtheysawhimstaggerontheedgeofarockanddisappear.
