           Theninthelongdaysonboardship,whenthevessel,glidingonwithsecurityovertheazuresea,requirednocarebutthehandofthehelmsman,thankstothefavorablewindsthatswelledhersails,Edmond,withachartinhishand,becametheinstructorofJacopo,asthepoorAbbeFariahadbeenhistutor.Hepointedouttohimthebearingsofthecoast,explainedtohimthevariationsofthecompass,andtaughthimtoreadinthatvastbookopenedoverourheadswhichtheycallheaven,andwhereGodwritesinazurewithlettersofdiamonds.AndwhenJacopoinquiredofhim,"Whatistheuseofteachingallthesethingstoapoorsailorlikeme?"Edmondreplied,"Whoknows?Youmayonedaybethecaptainofavessel.Yourfellow-countryman,Bonaparte,becameemperor."WehadforgottentosaythatJacopowasaCorsican.
