           "Youmustteachmeasmallpartofwhatyouknow,"saidDantes,"ifonlytopreventyourgrowingwearyofme.Icanwellbelievethatsolearnedapersonasyourselfwouldpreferabsolutesolitudetobeingtormentedwiththecompanyofoneasignorantanduninformedasmyself.Ifyouwillonlyagreetomyrequest,Ipromiseyounevertomentionanotherwordaboutescaping."Theabbesmiled."Alas,myboy,"saidhe,"humanknowledgeisconfinedwithinverynarrowlimits;andwhenIhavetaughtyoumathematics,physics,history,andthethreeorfourmodernlanguageswithwhichIamacquainted,youwillknowasmuchasIdomyself.Now,itwillscarcelyrequiretwoyearsformetocommunicatetoyouthestockoflearningIpossess.
