           "Whyso?"inquiredDantes.

           "Becauseithasinstilledanewpassioninyourheartthatofvengeance."

           Dantessmiled."Letustalkofsomethingelse,"saidhe.

           Againtheabbelookedathim,thenmournfullyshookhishead;butinaccordancewithDantes’request,hebegantospeakofothermatters.Theelderprisonerwasoneofthosepersonswhoseconversation,likethatofallwhohaveexperiencedmanytrials,containedmanyusefulandimportanthintsaswellassoundinformation;butitwasneveregotistical,fortheunfortunatemanneveralludedtohisownsorrows.
