           Howdifferentlydideverythingnowappearinwhichhewasconcerned! HisattentionstoMissKingwerenowtheconsequenceofviewssolelyandhatefullymercenary;andthemediocrityofherfortuneprovednolongerthemoderationofhiswishes,buthiseagernesstograspatanything. Hisbehaviourtoherselfcouldnowhavehadnotolerablemotive;hehadeitherbeendeceivedwithregardtoherfortune,orhadbeengratifyinghisvanitybyencouragingthepreferencewhichshebelievedshehadmostincautiouslyshown. Everylingeringstruggleinhisfavourgrewfainterandfainter; andinfartherjustificationofMr.Darcy,shecouldnotbutallowMr.Bingley,whenquestionedbyJane,hadlongagoassertedhisblamelessnessintheaffair; thatproudandrepulsiveaswerehismanners,shehadnever,inthewholecourseoftheiracquaintance—anacquaintancewhichhadlatterlybroughtthemmuchtogether,andgivenherasortofintimacywithhisways—seenanythingthatbetrayedhimtobeunprincipledorunjust—anythingthatspokehimofirreligiousorimmoralhabits; thatamonghisownconnectionshewasesteemedandvalued—thatevenWickhamhadallowedhimmeritasabrother,andthatshehadoftenheardhimspeaksoaffectionatelyofhissisterastoprovehimcapableofsomeamiablefeeling;
