Hissisterswereanxiousforhishavinganestateofhisown; but,thoughhewasnowonlyestablishedasatenant,MissBingleywasbynomeansunwillingtopresideathistable—norwasMrs.Hurst,whohadmarriedamanofmorefashionthanfortune,lessdisposedtoconsiderhishouseasherhomewhenitsuitedher. Mr.Bingleyhadnotbeenofagetwoyears,whenhewastemptedbyanaccidentalrecommendationtolookatNetherfieldHouse. Hedidlookatit,andintoitforhalf-an-hour—waspleasedwiththesituationandtheprincipalrooms,satisfiedwithwhattheownersaidinitspraise,andtookitimmediately.
BetweenhimandDarcytherewasaverysteadyfriendship,inspiteofgreatoppositionofcharacter. BingleywasendearedtoDarcybytheeasiness,openness,andductilityofhistemper,thoughnodispositioncouldofferagreatercontrasttohisown,andthoughwithhisownheneverappeareddissatisfied. OnthestrengthofDarcy’sregard,Bingleyhadthefirmestreliance,andofhisjudgementthehighestopinion. Inunderstanding,Darcywasthesuperior. Bingleywasbynomeansdeficient,butDarcywasclever. Hewasatthesametimehaughty,reserved,andfastidious,andhismanners,thoughwell-bred,werenotinviting.
