Mylandlordhallooedformetostop,ereIreachedthebottomofthegarden,andofferedtoaccompanymeacrossthemoor.Itwaswellhedid,forthewholehillbackwasonebillowy,whiteocean;theswellsandfallsnotindicatingcorrespondingrisesanddepressionsintheground:manypits,atleast,werefilledtoalevel;andentirerangesofmounds,therefuseofthequarries,blottedfromthechartwhichmyyesterday’swalkleftpicturedinmymind.Ihadremarkedononesideoftheroad,atintervalsofsixorsevenyards,alineofuprightstones,continuedthroughthewholelengthofthebarren:thesewereerected,anddaubedwithlimeonpurposetoserveasguidesinthedark;andalsowhenafall,likethepresent,confoundedthedeepswampsoneitherhandwiththefirmerpath:but,exceptingadirtydotpointinguphereandthere,alltracesoftheirexistencehadvanished:andmycompanionfounditnecessarytowarnmefrequentlytosteertotherightorleft,whenIimaginedIwasfollowing,correctly,thewindingsoftheroad.Weexchangedlittleconversation,andhehaltedattheentranceofThrushcrossPark,saying,Icouldmakenoerrorthere.Ouradieuxwerelimitedtoahastybow,andthenIpushedforward,trustingtomyownresources;fortheporter’slodgeisuntenantedasyet.
