           Oneday,assheinspectedthisdrawer,Iobservedthattheplay-things,andtrinketswhichrecentlyformeditscontents,weretransmutedintobitsoffoldedpaper.Mycuriosityandsuspicionswerearoused;Ideterminedtotakeapeepathermysterioustreasures;so,atnight,assoonassheandmymasterweresafeupstairs,Isearchedandreadilyfoundamongmyhouse-keysonethatwouldfitthelock.Havingopened,Iemptiedthewholecontentsintomyapron,andtookthemwithmetoexamineatleisureinmyownchamber.ThoughIcouldnotbutsuspect,Iwasstillsurprisedtodiscoverthattheywereamassofcorrespondence—dailyalmost,itmusthavebeenfromLintonHeathcliff:answerstodocumentsforwardedbyher.Theearlierdatedwereembarrassedandshort;gradually,however,theyexpandedintocopiousloveletters,foolish,astheageofthewriterrenderednatural,yetwithtoucheshereandtherewhichIthoughtwereborrowedfromamoreexperiencedsource.
