           Hedescended,andbiddingtheservantswaitinthepassage,went,followedbyme,tothekitchen.Itsoccupantshadrecommendedtheirangrydiscussion:Mrs.Linton,atleast,wasscoldingwithrenewedvigour;Heathcliffhadmovedtothewindow,andhunghishead,somewhatcowedbyherviolentratingapparently.Hesawthemasterfirst,andmadeahastymotionthatsheshouldbesilent;whichsheobeyed,abruptly,ondiscoveringthereasonofhisintimation.

           "Howisthis?"saidLinton,addressingher;"whatnotionofproprietymustyouhavetoremainhere,afterthelanguagewhichhasbeenheldtoyoubythatblackguard?Isuppose,becauseitishisordinarytalk,youthinknothingofit;youarehabituatedtohisbaseness,and,perhaps,imagineIcangetusedtoittoo!"

           "Haveyoubeenlisteningatthedoor,Edgar?"askedthemistress,inatoneparticularlycalculatedtoprovokeherhusband,implyingbothcarelessnessandcontemptofhisirritation.
