           IntheColdLairstheMonkey-PeoplewerenotthinkingofMowgli’sfriendsatall. TheyhadbroughttheboytotheLostCity,andwereverymuchpleasedwiththemselvesforthetime. MowglihadneverseenanIndiancitybefore,andthoughthiswasalmostaheapofruinsitseemedverywonderfulandsplendid. Somekinghadbuiltitlongagoonalittlehill. Youcouldstilltracethestonecausewaysthatleduptotheruinedgateswherethelastsplintersofwoodhungtotheworn,rustedhinges. Treeshadgrownintoandoutofthewalls;thebattlementsweretumbleddownanddecayed,andwildcreepershungoutofthewindowsofthetowersonthewallsinbushyhangingclumps. 

           Agreatrooflesspalacecrownedthehill,andthemarbleofthecourtyardsandthefountainswassplit,andstainedwithredandgreen,andtheverycobblestonesinthecourtyardwheretheking’selephantsusedtolivehadbeenthrustupandapartbygrassesandyoungtrees. Fromthepalaceyoucouldseetherowsandrowsofrooflesshousesthatmadeupthecitylookinglikeemptyhoneycombsfilledwithblackness; theshapelessblockofstonethathadbeenanidolinthesquarewherefourroadsmet; thepitsanddimplesatstreetcornerswherethepublicwellsoncestood,andtheshattereddomesoftempleswithwildfigssproutingontheirsides. Themonkeyscalledtheplacetheircity,andpretendedtodespisetheJungle-Peoplebecausetheylivedintheforest.
