           Andyettheyneverknewwhatthebuildingsweremadefornorhowtousethem. Theywouldsitincirclesonthehalloftheking’scouncilchamber,andscratchforfleasandpretendtobemen; ortheywouldruninandoutoftherooflesshousesandcollectpiecesofplasterandoldbricksinacorner,andforgetwheretheyhadhiddenthem,andfightandcryinscufflingcrowds,andthenbreakofftoplayupanddowntheterracesoftheking’sgarden,wheretheywouldshaketherosetreesandtheorangesinsporttoseethefruitandflowersfall. Theyexploredallthepassagesanddarktunnelsinthepalaceandthehundredsoflittledarkrooms,buttheyneverrememberedwhattheyhadseenandwhattheyhadnot;andsodriftedaboutinonesandtwosorcrowdstellingeachotherthattheyweredoingasmendid. Theydrankatthetanksandmadethewaterallmuddy,andthentheyfoughtoverit,andthentheywouldallrushtogetherinmobsandshout: "ThereisnooneinthejunglesowiseandgoodandcleverandstrongandgentleastheBandar-log." Thenallwouldbeginagaintilltheygrewtiredofthecityandwentbacktothetree-tops,hopingtheJungle-Peoplewouldnoticethem. 

           Mowgli,whohadbeentrainedundertheLawoftheJungle,didnotlikeorunderstandthiskindoflife. ThemonkeysdraggedhimintotheColdLairslateintheafternoon,andinsteadofgoingtosleep,asMowgliwouldhavedoneafteralongjourney,theyjoinedhandsanddancedaboutandsangtheirfoolishsongs.
