WhenshehadreachedMrs.Lynde’shouseshefoundthatladygone.Nothingdaunted,Anneproceededonwardtothechurchalone.Intheporchshefoundacrowdoflittlegirls,allmoreorlessgailyattiredinwhitesandbluesandpinks,andallstaringwithcuriouseyesatthisstrangerintheirmidst,withherextraordinaryheadadornment.AvonlealittlegirlshadalreadyheardqueerstoriesaboutAnne.Mrs.Lyndesaidshehadanawfultemper;JerryBuote,thehiredboyatGreenGables,saidshetalkedallthetimetoherselfortothetreesandflowerslikeacrazygirl.
