           “Yesterdayyouwantedtobeaseagull,”sniffedMarilla.“Ithinkyouareveryfickleminded.Itoldyoutolearnthatprayerandnottalk.Butitseemsimpossibleforyoutostoptalkingifyou’vegotanybodythatwilllistentoyou.Sogouptoyourroomandlearnit.”

           “Oh,Iknowitprettynearlyallnow—allbutjustthelastline.”

           “Well,nevermind,doasItellyou.Gotoyourroomandfinishlearningitwell,andstaythereuntilIcallyoudowntohelpmegettea.”

           “CanItaketheappleblossomswithmeforcompany?”pleadedAnne.

           “No;youdon’twantyourroomclutteredupwithflowers.Youshouldhaveleftthemonthetreeinthefirstplace.”

           “Ididfeelalittlethatway,too,”saidAnne.“IkindoffeltIshouldn’tshortentheirlovelylivesbypickingthem—Iwouldn’twanttobepickedifIwereanappleblossom.Butthetemptationwasirresistible.Whatdoyoudowhenyoumeetwithanirresistibletemptation?”

           “Anne,didyouhearmetellyoutogotoyourroom?”

           Annesighed,retreatedtotheeastgable,andsatdowninachairbythewindow.

           “There—Iknowthisprayer.Ilearnedthatlastsentencecomingupstairs.NowI’mgoingtoimaginethingsintothisroomsothatthey’llalwaysstayimagined.
