           Mrs.Rachel,beforeshehadfairlyclosedthedoor,hadtakenamentalnoteofeverythingthatwasonthattable.Therewerethreeplateslaid,sothatMarillamustbeexpectingsomeonehomewithMatthewtotea;butthedisheswereeverydaydishesandtherewasonlycrab-applepreservesandonekindofcake,sothattheexpectedcompanycouldnotbeanyparticularcompany.YetwhatofMatthew’swhitecollarandthesorrelmare?Mrs.Rachelwasgettingfairlydizzywiththisunusualmysteryaboutquiet,unmysteriousGreenGables.
