           OneafternoonafewdayslaterMarillacameslowlyinfromthefrontyardwhereshehadbeentalkingtoacaller—amanwhomAnneknewbysightasSadlerfromCarmody.AnnewonderedwhathecouldhavebeensayingtobringthatlooktoMarilla’sface.

           “WhatdidMr.Sadlerwant,Marilla?”

           MarillasatdownbythewindowandlookedatAnne.Thereweretearsinhereyesindefianceoftheoculist’sprohibitionandhervoicebrokeasshesaid:

           “HeheardthatIwasgoingtosellGreenGablesandhewantstobuyit.”

           “Buyit!BuyGreenGables?”Annewonderedifshehadheardaright.“Oh,Marilla,youdon’tmeantosellGreenGables!”
