           AwealthymanufacturerofNewBrunswickhaddiedandleftpartofhisfortunetoendowalargenumberofscholarshipstobedistributedamongthevarioushighschoolsandacademiesoftheMaritimeProvinces,accordingtotheirrespectivestandings.TherehadbeenmuchdoubtwhetheronewouldbeallottedtoQueen’s,butthematterwassettledatlast,andattheendoftheyearthegraduatewhomadethehighestmarkinEnglishandEnglishLiteraturewouldwinthescholarship—twohundredandfiftydollarsayearforfouryearsatRedmondCollege.NowonderthatAnnewenttobedthatnightwithtinglingcheeks!

           “I’llwinthatscholarshipifhardworkcandoit,”sheresolved.“Wouldn’tMatthewbeproudifIgottobeaB.A.?Oh,it’sdelightfultohaveambitions.I’msogladIhavesuchalot.Andthereneverseemstobeanyendtothem—that’sthebestofit.Justassoonasyouattaintooneambitionyouseeanotheroneglitteringhigherupstill.Itdoesmakelifesointeresting.”
