           Butsuddenly,asherdilated,frightenedeyesgazedoutovertheaudience,shesawGilbertBlytheawayatthebackoftheroom,bendingforwardwithasmileonhisface—asmilewhichseemedtoAnneatoncetriumphantandtaunting.Inrealityitwasnothingofthekind.GilbertwasmerelysmilingwithappreciationofthewholeaffairingeneralandoftheeffectproducedbyAnne’sslenderwhiteformandspiritualfaceagainstabackgroundofpalmsinparticular.JosiePye,whomhehaddrivenover,satbesidehim,andherfacecertainlywasbothtriumphantandtaunting.ButAnnedidnotseeJosie,andwouldnothavecaredifshehad.Shedrewalongbreathandflungherheadupproudly,courageanddeterminationtinglingoverherlikeanelectricshock.ShewouldnotfailbeforeGilbertBlythe—heshouldneverbeabletolaughather,never,never!Herfrightandnervousnessvanished;andshebeganherrecitation,herclear,sweetvoicereachingtothefarthestcorneroftheroomwithoutatremororabreak.Self-possessionwasfullyrestoredtoher,andinthereactionfromthathorriblemomentofpowerlessnesssherecitedasshehadneverdonebefore.Whenshefinishedtherewereburstsofhonestapplause.
