           Therewasno“mahoganyfurniture,”buttherewasawhite-paintedbookcasefilledwithbooks,acushionedwickerrocker,atoilettablebefrilledwithwhitemuslin,aquaint,gilt-framedmirrorwithchubbypinkCupidsandpurplegrapespaintedoveritsarchedtop,thatusedtohanginthespareroom,andalowwhitebed.

           AnnewasdressingforaconcertattheWhiteSandsHotel.TheguestshadgotitupinaidoftheCharlottetownhospital,andhadhuntedoutalltheavailableamateurtalentinthesurroundingdistrictstohelpitalong.BerthaSampsonandPearlClayoftheWhiteSandsBaptistchoirhadbeenaskedtosingaduet;MiltonClarkofNewbridgewastogiveaviolinsolo;WinnieAdellaBlairofCarmodywastosingaScotchballad;andLauraSpencerofSpencervaleandAnneShirleyofAvonleaweretorecite.

           AsAnnewouldhavesaidatonetime,itwas“anepochinherlife,”andshewasdeliciouslyathrillwiththeexcitementofit.MatthewwasintheseventhheavenofgratifiedprideoverthehonorconferredonhisAnneandMarillawasnotfarbehind,althoughshewouldhavediedratherthanadmitit,andsaidshedidn’tthinkitwasveryproperforalotofyoungfolkstobegaddingovertothehotelwithoutanyresponsiblepersonwiththem.

           AnneandDianaweretodriveoverwithJaneAndrewsandherbrotherBillyintheirdouble-seatedbuggy;andseveralotherAvonleagirlsandboysweregoingtoo.Therewasapartyofvisitorsexpectedoutfromtown,andaftertheconcertasupperwastobegiventotheperformers.

           “Doyoureallythinktheorgandywillbebest?”queriedAnneanxiously.
