           “Andyou,Anne-girl?”

           “I’veenjoyedeveryminuteofthetime,”saidAnne,throwingherarmsimpulsivelyabouttheoldwoman’sneckandkissingherwrinkledcheek.DianawouldneverhavedaredtodosuchathingandfeltratheraghastatAnne’sfreedom.ButMissBarrywaspleased,andshestoodonherverandaandwatchedthebuggyoutofsight.Thenshewentbackintoherbighousewithasigh.Itseemedverylonely,lackingthosefreshyounglives.MissBarrywasaratherselfisholdlady,ifthetruthmustbetold,andhadnevercaredmuchforanybodybutherself.Shevaluedpeopleonlyastheywereofservicetoheroramusedher.Annehadamusedher,andconsequentlystoodhighintheoldlady’sgoodgraces.ButMissBarryfoundherselfthinkinglessaboutAnne’squaintspeechesthanofherfreshenthusiasms,hertransparentemotions,herlittlewinningways,andthesweetnessofhereyesandlips.

           “IthoughtMarillaCuthbertwasanoldfoolwhenIheardshe’dadoptedagirloutofanorphanasylum,”shesaidtoherself,“butIguessshedidn’tmakemuchofamistakeafterall.IfI’dachildlikeAnneinthehouseallthetimeI’dbeabetterandhappierwoman.”

           AnneandDianafoundthedrivehomeaspleasantasthedrivein—pleasanter,indeed,sincetherewasthedelightfulconsciousnessofhomewaitingattheendofit.ItwassunsetwhentheypassedthroughWhiteSandsandturnedintotheshoreroad.Beyond,theAvonleahillscameoutdarklyagainstthesaffronsky.Behindthemthemoonwasrisingoutoftheseathatgrewallradiantandtransfiguredinherlight
